Blizzard Guru: Dear Blizzard: Do Not Change The Art Direction!

  • Kris · 1 year ago
I think that the new art direction will grow on people and once they play the real thing they'll discover that it's not that bad as they expected it to be.
  • snowfreak · 1 year ago
to OAK..it will not be a 50 to 100 hour game...they specifically said they are shooting for the amount of time it took to beat diablo 2...which is NOT 50 to 100 hours...if it took you that long you must really suck.

yeah cause seeing 20 minutes of a game cant give you at all an idea of how it will look *shakes head*...i dont hate the style, but it DOES need to be changed. as one guy said, this is diablo not warcraft...DARK AND GRITTY!

oh and btw...please no full respecs! limited is ok...no complete respecing all the time.
  • Oak · 1 year ago
I'm trying to be intentionally conservative - and to make a couple of point: namely that the gameplay you will experience will be significantly larger in relation to a 20 minute snippet. 5 or 20 hours, 50, 1000 hours who cares - it will be longer than 20 minutes. And I know that a 20 minute snippet *can* in theory give you an idea of how an entire game will feel, but do you concede that it *might* also not be indicative of the overall feel? My second point is that this clip, being only 20 minutes long, shouldn't be enough to start running petitions over, that perhaps we should give Bliz the benefit of the doubt for a while.

We're all fans here, no need to shake heads and tell people they suck. But as FANS who spent a lot of time playing the game, I think it would behove us to realise that we probably spent most of our time replaying through the harder more rewarding areas - which were almost all that "darker, grittier gothic" feel people are screaming for. I doubt we'll be looking at vibrant colours as seen in the trailer for much of the games duration.

And for the record ... the oversized armour pieces I do think seem out of place, but the colours of the environment seem just fine to me. I can happily imagine a nasty spectral green light underground, or slaying bad guys above ground in sunlight.
  • snowfreak · 1 year ago
Hey Oak...sorry if i was aggressive...i am just anticipating the game VERY MUCH and was very passionate...i am starting to LOVE the style, but i still think it needs some changes, like the armor and a bit of the feel (cartoony i guess....i don't see it THAT much though)....those kind of things...again sorry lol.
  • Oak · 1 year ago
heh +1 to the "VERY MUCH".
I agree some change would be cool too.
  • Dynotaku · 1 year ago
I'd be fine with some pastel forest areas, even some brightly lit plains and town areas and generally having a variety to the palette, my objection to the soft, bright palette comes from the dungeon areas. Those areas should be dark and creepy, it should be pushed as hard as they can for that claustraphobic, what's around that next corner lurking in the shadows feel. But now the palette is monotonously colorful. Of course we haven't seen the whole game, but we have seen a dungeon and a forest area and they both have similar palettes.

You're gonna go make me sign that other petition aren't you? :P

THe art direction needs to be changed end of story. This is Diablo not warcraft Damnit!
  • Deknoob · 1 year ago
Stylization over realism and not being afraid of color are two of Blizzards dearest art philosophies - It's Blizzard Dammit, get used to it!

Which warcraft? are you talking about this warcraft?
    http://download.net.pl/img/c2476801ef2278db9939...
    or this one?
    http://wirelessdigest.typepad.com/photos/uncate...

because i cant see any real similarities between art direction of this two games and what we know already about Diablo 3.

this whole "Blizzard change art direction" petition is pretty dumb.
  • Oak · 1 year ago
Good job Sol. Consider me signed.

At the very least the other petition requesting a change in direction was incredibly premature.
Given that D3 is still only a pre-release product that we've essentially been given a 20 minute preview (of what's possibly 50-100 hour game?).

I'm all for giving Blizzard a chance to develop a game with it's own identity. I've already got Diablo 2 ... if I just wanted the same game I'd just play that. I'm looking forward to a new story, and if they want to start it looking a little more lively than the last, more power to them.
  • Seraph1 · 1 year ago
Let's all start a petition for something we don't like or want changed (or err, unchanged).

I do though agree that the art direction as of present is satisfactory. To be honest, I figure a lot of people were all too used to Diablo 2's graphics. At the time of its release in 2000, its graphics were already somewhat lagging against technology. But as much as Diablo 2 was never specifically praised for its graphics, it was never criticized for it either. It was a case of the gameplay simply being infinitely addictive and enjoyable, and no one bothered much about the graphics being outdated. I guess with us being in 2008 and graphics rendering being as advanced as it is, the new look of Diablo 3 came as a slight surprise to some people. I've mentioned before on diablofans.com that I imagine there'll be plenty of gothic in Diablo 3, with a fair share of fantasy, too (in the sense of vibrant, lush colors and so on). I have to admit, I was slightly surprised for a few moments too when the first few seconds of the gameplay video rolled by and I found myself almost asking "is this Diablo?". The look was unfamiliar to a certain degree; however, I was in awe when the barbarian and witchdoctor exited the dungeon and stepped out into a beautiful, breathtaking outdoor environment. It was something to behold.

Anyway, without making too much of a story of it - I think the current art direction is a-ok.

    *waits for next petition*
  • Lilduelerz · 1 year ago
It is not the colors that bother me. I thought D2 has some great and very colorful scenery. What bothers me is the character models which resemble Zelda wearing WoW, spikey, armor and carrying impossibly huge exaggerated weapons. Tone back on the scale of the armor and the weapons and give the characters a little more realistic look and I am 100% supportive of Blizzard.
  • Brandon · 1 year ago
I as a long time diablo fan sign this petition because it is fact and I think the art style of Diablo 3 looks great.

PLEASE Blizzard do not change ANYTHING! I LOVE how the D3 looks. Ive been playing D2 since it came out (whats that, 8 years now?) and I'm SO excited for D3! EXCELLENT JOB!!!!

Don't listen to this crap about making it 'darker', the game looks wonderful, scary & beautiful! All of those so called 'better redone images' are just white-washed and look like crap.

If you feel the same, sign the petition against the other petition. This game is freaking sweet the way it is!

"Q: Being colorful destroys the game’s immersion and ‘gothic feel’.

A: Gothic Cathedrals are filled with vibrant colors, due to the heavy use of stained glass windows and vibrant furnishings, blah, blah, blah..."

Too bad, that in the gameplay video, the shown location is Forgotten fucking TOMBS, not a cathedral. So get your facts straight, retard. You are some fucking 13 yo wow-kid who is uncapable to understand arguments in this dispute. Go cut yourself.
PS: If the tombs look like fucking disco, they better discontinue this game.
  • Sol Invictus · 1 year ago
You're really taking this personally aren't you?
  • dre · 1 year ago
yes, i'm even rdy to start 2nd comunist revolution in uganda, cos of that
  • AJ Stinger · 1 year ago
dont listen to those other douchebags!1 dont change it
  • some1 · 1 year ago
....you psyco ..tehy could do an option to change the actual art (if you call art that piece of copy/paste from wow) to a darkness or tetric desgin and easy way a few game have that option , and if you want to play some plastic game go play wow and wc3 , no one is saying that the 3d efect are bad but the color could be better and the option coul be added
  • mikwes912 · 1 year ago
It couldn't be so hard for blizzard to make some colors "darker". It's extremly easy and theyv'e done it before (Diablo 1 & 2). It's just some texture editing;). I like the outer areas thogh. But in tombs and cathedrals it should look more like the sequels. I would really like to see the light radius effect in D3, as it gave Diablo 1 & 2 it's "dark feeling" that i sure like.
  • Grenades_AHOY · 1 year ago
Agreed, Diablo 3 isn't Diablo 2, I personally think that Diablo 3 looks great, sure a couple spots could be a tiny bit darker, but Diablo 3's artistic direction is looking great for the most part.

    Trust Blizz..
  • Root · 1 year ago
In my personal opinion, D2 wasn't very good colorwise. D3 is much brighter and much more stylish! I love what they did, and I don't think it looks like Warcraft at ALL. I personally hate warcraft! So, the people that started a petition are so stupid! They've waited 8 years, and all they can say is.. OMFG GHEY RAINBOw. shut up already, give it a chance.. no wait.. you don't need to give it a chance because it'll be the best game ever conceived in history of man kind :D!

You know, if I didnt see that damn rainbow I wouldn't have cared.
but that rainbow ruined my respect for the Diablo III artwork
  • psychodave · 1 year ago
Do not change, please!!! The game looks great so far and I would hate to see it change...please keep on with the current art direction!
  • Djinn_690 · 1 year ago
If they take off the rainbow and the smiling statues I'm happy!

Blizzard will make another great game Im not much a fan of wow , and i dont see the same style... its what entertains me is the dark side of the game , its change its advancement , its new , if you dont like it get over it , create your own realm , I loved the first 2 and the second was more colorful than the first. its more visual now and you never know they might have darker more twisted areas... still to come.... eh Im excited.

What the hell. Bright and vibrant ? Excuse me, did you actually play the game ?

In fact D3 appears darker than D2. How about a horde of bright blue (frozen) and bright green (poisoned) monsters in a pale yellow / bright desert (outside Lut Gholein) or bright red dungeon (Worldstone Keep) with a sorceress spamming a bright red firewall, a Necro spamming bright white Bone Spirit, another sorceress doing massive white zig-zagging chain lightning damage and a Paladin casting auras onto everyone?

Just *love* the changes in D3. Keep up the good work Blizzard - take your time and get it right!
  • Jomamma · 1 year ago
Get an adult to make that next time.
  • Martin · 1 year ago
I think there should be two different options for colorful game and dark colors when you installing the game or two different downloadable patches!
Thene everone can make his own choise - dark or colorful Diablo 3.
  • Josh · 1 year ago
I see a lot more pastel colors than 'vibrant' colors.
  • pkt-zer0 · 1 year ago
Seconded. I'm not against the game being colorful at all, it's simply that overuse of pastel colors takes away a lot from a key aspect of Diablo - horror. Adventuring in the depths of a tomb abandoned for centuries, beset by hundreds of relentlessly advancing foes... that should conjure up feelings of dread and despair, the player's avatar being a hero of epic proportions not because he can casually plow through thousands of enemies, but because he manages to stand his ground even against overwhelming odds.

The concept art is pretty great, though, it'd be a shame if the in-game art abandoned its style. Anyhow, just my two cents.

Overuse? In a 20 minute clip you can tell that they overused something?... or anything?
  • Callan Khera · 1 year ago
As long as the feel, atmosphere and depth of the diablo world stays intact and a main focus of the development, the change in colours can only enhance the experience.
  • fuck off · 1 year ago
what kind of fag site is this?
  • KnightWolf · 1 year ago
You have my full support, the game is shaping up greatly, nothing needs to be changed ^_^

The development team ( namely Pardo ) said they already tested other looks and visual styles for the game, and they all didn't work including D2 look, because making a game very dark in 3D makes it look rubbish, and using dark colors and sharp contrast like in the altered pics makes the game distracting and painful to the player's eyes which affects the gameplay negatively.

Diablo wasn't really much of a horror game, it was an action hack & slash game with an eerie atmosphere, and that atmosphere is still there, but in a different way, live with it guys ^_^

    Keep it up Blizz
  • Kai · 1 year ago
youre all fucki fags. you guys call urself diablo fans and yet you like where there taking this game, thats fucken rediculos. What there doing is destroying what diablo is all about. Diablo is all about dark glommy and horrific shit not fuckin rainbows and yes they put rainbows in the fuckin game. You should fuckin start playin WoW and leave diablo to its true fans.
  • sathanas · 1 year ago
lol @ all the anger. It's the first time they've shown the game. Things will change over time like they always do.

Diablo to me, the first one, was dark and atmospheric. I got over the fact that Diablo2 looks like an anime cartoon in comparison to the first, I'll also get over Diablo 3 having actual colours that aren't black or red, too. Gameplay is what is more important, and until I've played it I will reserve judgement and not call people fags cause they have opinions that differ from my own.
  • lol@u · 1 year ago
Whaaa, some people have too much salt in their manginas. Get over it.
  • energester · 1 year ago
No true fan would sign that...
  • energester · 1 year ago
This is a horror game about the devil, hell and demons.
They dont mean dark as in the amount of light dumbass. Well maybe light radius which they still need. It means dark as in evil sadistic and atmospheric.

The only vibrant color I want to see is BLOOD which is covering the floor that is littered with bodies that do not disappear. I want to see impaled corpses and hear babies screaming in the distance. Most of the creatures should be demons or undead that are scary as fuck.
  • Durgat · 1 year ago
You guys are stupid, you're sabotaging the development of the game, you are the ones who are not true Diablo Fans, shame on all of you.
